Your Day-to-Day
As a Traffic Signal Technician, you’ll have a hands-on role in keeping traffic systems safe, reliable, and running at peak performance. Your rewarding work will include:
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety.
- Servicing traffic signal and fiber optic equipment by inspecting, testing, splicing, and replacing faulty components such as LED modules, electronic traffic components, cables, loop detectors, switches, and fixtures.
- Installing, troubleshooting, and repairing CCTV systems, Microwave Vehicle Detection Systems (MVDS), and Dynamic Message Signs (DMS).
- Responding promptly to urgent traffic signal malfunctions, including directing traffic and performing on-site repairs as needed.
A successful candidate will bring:
- Strong technical knowledge of traffic signals, controllers, detection systems, and ITS equipment
- Electrical and mechanical aptitude, including wiring, cabling, and equipment installation
- Troubleshooting skills for diagnosing circuits, communications, and signal malfunctions
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment, such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes, splicing tools, and hand/power tools
- Ability to read plans, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Effectively and professionally communicate with your crew mates and members of management
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- A safety-first mindset
- Adaptability to work independently and as a part of a field crew

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years-of-age or older
- High School diploma or GED equivalency
- Minimum 3 years’ recent and verifiable experience as a Traffic Signal Technician
- Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam and drug screening
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints
- IMSA Level II or III Certification is highly preferred
- IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification or equivalent is highly preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing at heights over 15 feet to access traffic signal equipment and related infrastructure.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds of tools, equipment, and materials as part of installation and maintenance tasks.
- Requires manual dexterity for handling small components and wiring in confined spaces.
- Ability to walk, sit, stand, and drive for extended periods; occasional riding as a passenger to job sites.
- Ability to distinguish the range of color spectrum
- Comfortable working at heights on ladders, poles, or elevated platforms when installing or repairing signal equipment.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Exposure to traffic hazards and noise while working near active roadways; adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
- May require night, weekend, or emergency call-out work to respond to urgent signal malfunctions.
- Frequent travel between job sites within assigned region; occasional overnight stays may be necessary.
- Work involves physical exertion and extended periods in potentially uncomfortable positions during installation and troubleshooting tasks.
