Job Summary
The Underground Utility Locator identifies and marks underground infrastructure—such as pipes, cables, and lines—using specialized electromagnetic or radar equipment to prevent damage during excavation. They review blueprints, use marking paint/flags, document findings via GPS/apps, and work in varied weather conditions to ensure safety and compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Locating and Marking: Utilize electromagnetic transmitters/receivers and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, electric, telecom).
- Site Documentation: Use paint and flags to color-code utility lines according to APWA standards.
- Plan Interpretation: Reviewing blue-stakes,, blueprints, and GIS mapping systems to identify potential utility locations.
- Documentation & Reporting: Creating detailed reports, taking photos, and updating digital records of located utilities via tablet/specialized software.
- Safety Compliance: Ensuring all utility locations are marked before construction begins to avoid,, electrical shocks, gas leaks, and service interruptions.
- Emergency Response: Responding to urgent locate requests for emergency digs.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Skills: Strong analytical skills, technical aptitude for operating equipment, and ability to read blueprints.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand/walk for 8+ hours, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat).
- Driving: Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of construction practices, public safety regulations, and utility infrastructure is preferred.
Utility Locators work on construction sites, in residential areas, and along public rights-of-way. The job requires working outdoors for the majority of the day and often involves independent work, frequently responding to urgent, time-sensitive job orders.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing at heights over 15 feet to access traffic signal equipment and related infrastructure.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds of tools, equipment, and materials as part of installation and maintenance tasks.
- Requires manual dexterity for handling small components and wiring in confined spaces.
- Ability to walk, sit, stand, and drive for extended periods; occasional riding as a passenger to job sites.
- Ability to distinguish the range of color spectrum
- Comfortable working at heights on ladders, poles, or elevated platforms when installing or repairing signal equipment.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Exposure to traffic hazards and noise while working near active roadways; adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
- May require night, weekend, or emergency call-out work to respond to urgent signal malfunctions.
- Frequent travel between job sites within assigned region; occasional overnight stays may be necessary.
- Work involves physical exertion and extended periods in potentially uncomfortable positions during installation and troubleshooting tasks.
