Job Summary
The Streetlight Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of public lighting systems, including streetlights, roadway lighting controls, and related electrical infrastructure. This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of lighting systems in compliance with California electrical codes, Caltrans standards, and local municipal regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
Installation & Upgrades
- Install new streetlight systems, including poles, fixtures, wiring, and control equipment.
- Replace or upgrade lighting components (e.g., LEDs, ballasts, photocells, drivers).
- Assist in retrofitting older lighting systems to energy-efficient LED technology.
- Interpret and follow blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering specifications.
Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform routine inspections of streetlights, poles, and underground/overhead electrical systems.
- Diagnose electrical and mechanical issues (e.g., outages, day burning, wiring faults).
- Repair or replace damaged components such as lamps, fuses, breakers, and conduits.
- Respond to service requests and emergency outages in a timely manner.
Electrical Troubleshooting
- Use diagnostic tools (multimeters, voltage testers, circuit tracers) to identify faults.
- Troubleshoot circuits, control cabinets, timers, and photoelectric systems.
- Identify and repair short circuits, open circuits, grounding issues, and voltage irregularities.
Safety Compliance
- Comply with all OSHA safety standards and Florida electrical safety regulations
- Work safely at heights using bucket trucks or lifts.
- Implement traffic control measures when working near roadways.
- Properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, safety shoes, gloves, high-visibility apparel, and eye protection as required by work conditions.
- Follow all injury prevention practices and participate in return-to-work programs if applicable
- Promptly report workplace injuries, incidents, or hazards in accordance with company policy.
- Participate in required safety training programs including hazard communication (HazCom), and safe lifting techniques.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses in accordance with company policy.
Equipment Operation
- Operate bucket trucks, lifts, and other specialized vehicles.
- Use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Handle underground locating or trenching equipment when needed.
Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with supervisors, engineers, utility companies, and city departments.
- Communicate with the public when addressing reported outages or issues.
- Support project teams during construction or infrastructure improvements.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3-5 years of experience in electrical maintenance ideally in street lighting systems
- Possession of relevant certifications, such as International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) will be a plus.
- Experience with high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.
- Ability to read schematics and technical drawings.
- Familiarity with LED lighting systems and smart lighting controls.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong attention to detail in filling orders and documentation
- Solid understanding of safety procedures and transportation regulations
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- Ability to follow instructions, prioritize tasks, and work independently
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and at heights.

Working Conditions
- Outdoor field work, often along roadways and highways.
- This role is crucial for maintaining public safety and ensuring that street lighting systems function effectively, contributing to the overall safety and quality of urban environments.
- Exposure to traffic, weather, and electrical hazards.
- May require on-call rotations, night shifts, or emergency response.
- Use of bucket trucks and climbing equipment.
Street Light Technicians can work on highway construction sites, in residential areas, and along public rights-of-way. The job requires working outdoors for most of the day and often involves independent work, frequently responding to urgent, time-sensitive job orders.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently bend, stoop, and kneel
- Occasionally climb ladders or work at heights above 15 feet
- Must be able to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds of tools, equipment, and materials as part of loading and unloading supplies and maintaining the warehouse
- Requires manual dexterity for handling small components
- Frequent walking, sitting, standing, and driving for extended periods; occasional riding as a passenger to job sites.
- Ability to work at heights on ladders or elevated platforms
